It's always important to know why you do the things you do. What's your motivation? What inspires you? With leadership in particular, you should have some solid reasons for choosing to influence the people around you. Being a leader can be exhausting sometimes, especially when you have a few different roles to play. But what keeps you going during those seasons of exhaustion are the reminders of the "why". The goal this week is to help you identify and discover the values that guide you along the journey of stepping into your own leadership.
Let's start by taking a Life Values Inventory. Discovering your values is always a good place to start. And if you already know what you value, this inventory is an insightful way to see them in a different light.
What was your values profile? Do you agree with the result? Take some time to think about the ways you have seen this play out in your life. Your values are beautyFULL because they are YOURS. They will guide you when life feels messy, when you have big decisions to make, or when you need help remembering your WHY.
Now that you know your values profile, it's time to identify some core values that are more specific guides for you. Discovering your core values will help guide your focus in school, your career choices one day, and even your friendships and relationships. When you know how you want to feel and what you want to achieve, you're able to lead from a place of knowing yourself. And knowing yourself is pretty badass.
Some of the most common core values are PEACE, WEALTH, HAPPINESS, INTEGRITY, JOY, LOVE, SUCCESS, RECOGNITION, FAMILY, FRIENDSHIP, FAME, TRUTH, AUTHENTICITY, WISDOM, POWER, STATUS, INFLUENCE, JUSTICE.
Right off the bat, which two or three stand out to you as perhaps the most important to you? Where did those values come from?
A lot of us learn our values from the families and systems we grew up in. It can be helpful to categorize your values based on where they may have originated, because then you know even more about yourself. Use this worksheet to map out the values of people in your life and see if they look a little bit like some of your values!
