Girl Power: Women Providing Water

By Regular Contributor, Sana Noor

What comes to mind when you think of the 21st Century?

The ever changing and evolving technology, distances being covered within minutes, sky scrapers that don’t fear the clouds and much more. However, what typically doesn’t come to mind is people not having clean water or even sources of acquiring that clean water. In a world so advanced, how can so many live like this?

This is where GLOBAL CITIZEN comes in. They have partnered up with WaterAid to help all those societies without proper sanitation and clean water gain this basic necessity. WaterAid is an international nongovernmental organization. Their mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene, and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities.

It befalls on the girls and women to provide water for their family, and when poverty is at its peak, you don’t have much of a choice. Girls of school going age start to remain at home and travel long distances to water sources that they blindly trust because the plight for water leads to desperation. These water sources are disease filled and unhygienic in nature, but girls like Ze and Solo (in the photo above) really have no other choice. The time that they spend carrying canteens and containers of water over shoulders so small, could be spent hunched over books in schools. These girls could be our next leaders, doctors, and teachers were they not putting their life at risk every day instead.

So what’s the plan?

—    Don’t take water for granted.

—    Don’t waste water. People, especially children, all over the world are without this basic necessity.

—    Donate to help countries like Africa, India, Pakistan, and other third world nations fulfill their basic need.

—    WaterAid is accepting donations and has been successfully working to eradicate this menace.

“Poverty is such a massive issue and giving people access to water is the first step in overcoming it.”

—   Samantha Barks
