I make it a point to visit my friends often. I don't believe friendships should only be reserved for social media. This year, I've tried to make a real effort to visit old friends and former colleagues. I took a to visit old friends. I invite friends over for dinner or on adventures. I truly want to know that my friends are doing well.
I haven't seen some of my friends since I was 14, but catching up with them was just like old times. Even though we are different people now, at different points in our lives, it was as if no time had passed at all. My close friends now have similar personalities and interests as my friends from middle school. This made me start to wonder what all my friends have in common. What core personality trait do I seek in the people I choose to surround myself with? What kind of people am I attracted to without realizing?
Feelers. Every single person I hold dear to me is a feeler.
Empathy is both a major strength and a major weakness.
Feelers know this too well.
I believe in surrounding yourself with good people in order to build a community. If someone you know is down, lift them up in the way you can. This way, when you are down, they can lift you up as well. The world is brighter and more peaceful if we all help each other. However, part of the battle is admitting when you need help as well. Check in with your friends often. Building a community is tough. It takes effort to get to know someone and accept their flaws. If people in your community are in a good place, then you will be in a good place as well.
We have to come together, and that doesn't happen if we’re all isolated. Call up your friends and invite them over or invite yourself over. Meet new people and find common traits. It's okay to step back from people if they’re not helping you grow, but we need to build communities and support each other.
Take some time today to check in with your friends, old and new. Let them know that you care and our thinking of them. You never know who needs to hear it!
