Music Mondays: Cat Power

Cat Power's music has been heralded as soulful, depressing, introspective, rambling as well as a hearty mixture of folk and blues. Now the unique singer/songwriter is redefining ambition by writing, performing, and even producing her latest studio album, Sun, all by herself. The video for her first single, "Cherokee," is a haunting declaration of rebirth set against a backdrop of battling zombies in a seemingly post-apocalyptic world.

Born Charlyn Marie Marshall in Atlanta, Georgia, she migrated between her divorced parents and grandmother. The budding musician grew up loving music and even penned her first song in the fourth grade. She actually ended up quitting high school and began performing as Cat Power (the name was reportedly inspired by a "Cat Diesel Power" trucker cap) on local Atlanta stages. Cat relocated to New York City in 1992 and eventually caught the attention of Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, who helped her release her first full-length album, Dear Sir. Numerous albums followed containing everything from country and blues to covers of Nina Simone, Hank Williams, and Billie Holiday. Cat's erratic live performances, which often saw the artist singing with her back to the audience and stopping in the middle of songs, garnered almost as much attention as her music. She ended up suffering a nervous breakdown and took a break to seek treatment for alcohol abuse. Sun serves as Cat's stellar comeback, especially after her less-than-amicable breakup with actor Giovanni Ribisi and her extended hiatus from performing. We love Cat's unconventional approach to music and applaud her not only for always being true to herself and her craft, but for having the courage to combat her demons and come out even stronger on the other side.
