Lessons From a Favorite Flick: Deep Breath. Bring It On.

By: Devin Riggs, Regular Contributor

I recently watched Cool Runnings for the first time in a few years.

It is one of those movies that no matter where I’m at in life it always gives me a good kick the rear to get motivated, to push through, and to carry on.

I was three years old when the movie was first released. I don’t remember the first time I saw it, but I remember the feeling it gave me. The delight in every joke, and the hope and pride in that last scene. Don’t worry I won’t spoil the end, but seriously…it’s SO. GOOD.

There are so many good moments in this film, so many lessons you can take away, so many quotes, but the scene that always sticks out to me is when the team has just qualified for the Olympics and they are polishing their newly painted sled. Sanka asks what they should name it. The main character, Derice, confidently says, “I say we call it Cool Runnings” (hence the movie title). He then explains that it means “Peace Be the Journey.”

It means enjoy the ride, no matter how bumpy, or fast, or slow, or topsy-turvy. No matter the obstacles you find along your path, you take them as they come. You do what you can with what you have. And you do not give up just because it’s hard. You do not give up just because others do not believe you can do it.

Life is full of challenges. It is easy to get frustrated and angry because things aren’t working out the way you planned. It is easy to let these hurdles beat you down.

You mustn’t let them convince you to give up on your goal.

Watching this movie again reenergized me. It reminded me that sometimes success is not measured by how fast you get something done, or how perfect the final product is. Sometimes success is just getting across the finish line, even if you have to walk.

It also reminds me to find peace in moments of distress and challenge. To focus on what I can control, instead of worrying about what I cannot control. I am going to take each day and each moment as it comes. I am going to embrace the obstacles in my path, not as hindrances, but as opportunities to grow and become stronger.

Life will test us all.

Deep breath.

Bring it on.

Cool Runnings.
