Finding My Home

By Regular Contributor, Abigail Zeitler

Everyone has that moment when you’re listening to a random Spotify playlist and a song comes on that seems to be the soundtrack to your life at that very moment. The lyrics perfectly describe what you are going through. It’s like some magic force found the perfect song to match your life.

I came across the song, “Our Own House,” by Misterwives the other day and had that “moment.” The lyrics, upbeat vibe, and catchy tune made me strut to the beat of the music on my way to class. As I listened to the lyrics, I couldn’t help but notice the message they were trying to send my way.

I’d been thinking a lot about the future, and I’ve been having some doubts about where I’m going to end up next. I went from Indiana to Texas for college, and now… Where will I end up? And more importantly, where do I want to end up? I’m going to graduate next year, and I’ve been feeling a little homeless. But lately I’ve realized that “home” isn’t defined by a place. My home is defined however I want it to be. This song spoke to that…

“We built our own house, own house
With our hands over our hearts
And we swore on that day
That it will never fall apart

Wake up to the sun
Clouds always come undone
You give the light I need
Like water to a seed

Read it in a tale
One too tall to be real
And prove me wrong it seems
A heart can truly gleam

We built our own house, own house
With our hands over our hearts
And we swore on that day
That it will never fall apart

Take it all, take it away
We'll still have this undying
Love that is beating
Till our lungs stop breathing"

Building your own house and not letting it fall apart is exactly what we need to do to get rid of all that self-doubt we have on the inside. Building your our own home inside yourself provides the foundation of trust you need to go off into the unknown. We can lift ourselves up if we house the confidence and self-esteem on the inside.

Knowing yourself starts at the core. Figuring out why you love yourself and what makes up your “house” will then give you an opportunity to trust that everything is going to work out. You don’t exactly need an end destination to define yourself or your home. As The Beatles said “All you really need is love.” An undying love for who you are on the inside and trust that home is wherever you take yourself to.
